Stop making copies

Version History
Get in the habit of naming versions within the document instead of making copies. In Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings use the Tools menu and choose "Version history." There you can "Name current version.
Try to get into the habit of naming your version when you make major changes.

You do not need to worry when collaborating with Google Apps.  If you or someone else makes changes use the File menu to go to "Version history" and "See version history." There you can review automatically saved versions or ones you have named.
In the Version history you can click on the 3 dots on a version to "Name version."

Use the 3 dots to name version

This way you can keep using the same document over time without having similar documents in your Google Drive with the same name. Go to the Version history to see what it looked like in the past. Make changes and edits on the same document, rather than making a copy.
